The Old Cemetery is the oldest Christian burial ground preserved in Kalmar. A church was built during the first half of the 13th century and in this connection they started to lay out the cemetery.
Both the church, called Bykyrkan (the "Village-church") and the cemetery were situated at the square in the middle of the medieval city. Bykyrkan was blown up during the 1670s, when the whole city of Kalmar was moved to it´s present place on Kvarnholmen. The cemetery, however, remained at the original place and was used up to the 1860s, when the South Cemetery, close to Kalmar Castle, was ready.
Even today there are tombstones from the 17th and 18th centuries and standing gravestones from the 19th century. Several of these gravestones and tombstones were locally made. The material used was limestone from Öland. Memorial crosses of cast iron became common in the middle of the 19th century.
