Discovering Kalmar needn't cost your shirt. Here are a few tips from both residents and visitors.
Come to Kalmar during the town festival when everything is free so that you can spend a little bit more on restaurants and culture out of the money you have saved on all of the free activities!
Pack a picnic basket, get your bicycle out and cycle around Kalmar's oases like Stensö, Svinö and Ängö. End your trip in Sweden's most beautiful park, Stadsparken, where you can lay out your picnic rug on the grass. Then simply enjoy!
If you want the perfect experience of Kalmar on a budget, you should definitely contact the canoe or kayak rental places and paddle through the town. Because Kalmar is at its best when seen from an ever varying place – the water. On the right day if you're lucky you might also catch a glimpse of a seal or two, resting on a rock close to the shore.
We always have a small budget and we often use the Kalmar pass, where two people pay for just one. That suits us perfectly. Children have free entrance to the County Museum, where there is a big playroom. Lunchtime concerts in the Cathedral or a performance in Larmtorget, or sitting and watching people go past while enjoying a coffee on one of the pedestrianised streets – all of these are definitely worth doing.

Take a picnic basket and your family and go to Skälby 4H farm. Here there is a fantastic play area with lots of open spaces where the children can play, pet the baby goats and wander around among the animals in an attractive setting.
Explore Kalmar by bike! Enjoy the summer in the Krusenstiernska garden, Stadsparken, Kalmarsundsparken or on Larmtorget. Or take the chance to check out the various sports events like the Ironman, the canal swim, or whatever most appeals to you. It's free!
